Gatsby Style Braai Day Boerewors Roll

Be inspired by the great Cape Town Gatsby and take your boerie rolls to a new level.

Ingredients

  • 30 ml (2 Tbsp) sunflower oil
  • 2 x onions, sliced into rings
  • 2.5 ml (½ tsp) chilli powder
  • 1 x 410 g can Rhodes Quality Braai Relish
  • 1 x 115 g sachet Rhodes Quality Tomato Paste
  • 500 ml (2 cups) hand-cut potato chips
  • oil for frying
  • salt and brown vinegar
  • 500 g boerewors, hot off the braai and sliced lengthways
  • 1 x large soft baguette loaf
  • Soft butter for spreading
  • 2 x tomatoes, sliced
  • Iceberg lettuce leaves, sliced

Method

  1. Heat the 30 ml (2 Tbsp) oil in a saucepan and fry the onion rings over medium heat until soft and browned.
  2. Remove half of the onions and set aside.
  3. Add the chilli powder to the remaining onion and stir.
  4. Add the Rhodes Quality Braai Relish and the Rhodes Quality Tomato Paste and bring to the heat.
  5. Simmer until thick.
  6. Heat the oil and fry the chips until done.
  7. Drain on paper towel.
  8. Season to taste with salt and vinegar.
    To assemble:
  9. Slice the baguette loaf lengthways but not all the way through.
  10. Smear with softened butter.
  11. Place a layer of lettuce on the bottom half of the baguette.
  12. Add a layer of sliced tomato.
  13. Add the sliced boerewors.
  14. Add the tomato sauce.
  15. Add the hot chips.
  16. Close with the top half of the baguette and serve.
